SECTION 02 / 5

Product of Sums (POS) and Maxterms

Start here SOP looks at the rows where the output is 1. But what if the output is 1 almost everywhere, and 0 in just two rows? Then it’s easier to describe the 0s. That’s the idea behind Product of Sums.

If only 2 of 40 students are absent, listing the absent ones is quicker. POS works the same way: it lists the few 0-rows.

The idea in one picture

SOP builds F from the 1-rows using ANDs then OR. POS builds F from the 0-rows using ORs then AND.

Look at rows where F=F = 1 0
Each row gives a minterm (AND of literals) maxterm (OR of literals)
Then join them with OR (+) AND (·)
Literal rule 1→A,0→A‾1 \to A , 0 \to \overline{A} 0→A,1→A‾0 \to A , 1 \to \overline{A} (the opposite!)

How to write a maxterm

Rule: for a row where F=0F = 0, input 0 → plain letter, input 1 → barred letter, and OR them.

A B C Maxterm Number
0 0 0 (A+B+C)\left(A + B + C\right) M0M_{0}
0 1 0 (A+B‾+C)\left(A + \overline{B} + C\right) M2M_{2}
1 1 0 (A‾+B‾+C)\left(\overline{A} + \overline{B} + C\right) M6M_{6}

Why the opposite rule? A maxterm must be 0 only in its own row. An OR is 0 only when every literal is 0. In row 010,A+B‾+C=0+0+0=00 1 0 , A + \overline{B} + C = 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 ✓, and in any other row at least one literal is 1.

The POS recipe

  1. Find the rows where F=0F = 0.
  2. Write the maxterm for each.
  3. AND them all together.

Example: F=Σm(3,4,5,6,7)F = \Sigma m \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right), so F=0F = 0 in rows 0, 1, 2:

F=(A+B+C)(A+B+C‾)(A+B‾+C)=F = \left(A + B + C\right) \left(A + B + \overline{C}\right) \left(A + \overline{B} + C\right) = ΠM(0,1,2)\Pi M \left(0 , 1 , 2\right)

Why it works: in a 0-row, its own maxterm is 0, so the whole AND is 0. In a 1-row, every maxterm is 1, so the AND is 1.

Another way to see it: POS of F=F = De Morgan applied to the SOP of F‾\overline{F}.

Conversions (very useful in MCQs)

Σm\Sigma m lists the 1-rows. ΠM\Pi M lists the 0-rows. Together they cover every row exactly once.

For a 3-variable function (rows 0–7):

You have You want Do this Example
F=Σm(3,4,5,6,7)F = \Sigma m \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right) F as ΠM\Pi M use the missing numbers ΠM(0,1,2)\Pi M \left(0 , 1 , 2\right)
F=ΠM(0,1,2)F = \Pi M \left(0 , 1 , 2\right) F as Σm\Sigma m use the missing numbers Σm(3,4,5,6,7)\Sigma m \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right)
F=Σm(3,4,5,6,7)F = \Sigma m \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right) F‾\overline{F} as Σm\Sigma m use the missing numbers F‾=\overline{F} = Σm(0,1,2)\Sigma m \left(0 , 1 , 2\right)
F=Σm(3,4,5,6,7)F = \Sigma m \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right) F‾\overline{F} as ΠM\Pi M keep the same numbers F‾=\overline{F} = ΠM(3,4,5,6,7)\Pi M \left(3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7\right)

Memory trick: switching between Σ and Π → use the other numbers. Switching F ↔︎ F‾\overline{F} → also use the other numbers. Doing both → the same numbers.

In one line: POS builds F from its 0-rows: each 0-row gives a maxterm (0 → letter, 1 → barred), and the maxterms are ANDed. Σm\Sigma m and ΠM\Pi M use complementary row numbers. Exam words: product of sums (POS), maxterm, ΠM\Pi M notation, OR-AND circuit, conjunctive normal form, complement of a function, Σ↔︎Π conversion.

Quick check

Write the maxterm for row A=1,B=0,C=1A = 1 , B = 0 , C = 1. (A‾+B+C‾),M5\left(\overline{A} + B + \overline{C}\right) , M_{5}.
F(A,B,C)=Σm(0,2,6)F \left(A , B , C\right) = \Sigma m \left(0 , 2 , 6\right). Write F as ΠM\Pi M. ΠM(1,3,4,5,7)\Pi M \left(1 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7\right).
F=ΠM(2,5)F = \Pi M \left(2 , 5\right). Write F‾\overline{F} as Σm\Sigma m. F‾=Σm(2,5)\overline{F} = \Sigma m \left(2 , 5\right) (F is 0 exactly in rows 2 and 5, so F‾\overline{F} is 1 there).
