Week 12 at a glance

Feed your mind

  • You become what you read, watch, hear, and the people you spend time with.
  • Books: 7 Habits (Covey), How Will You Measure Your Life? (Christensen), Give and Take (Grant), The Practice (Godin), One Minute for Yourself (Johnson), Steal Like an Artist (Kleon), Thrive (Huffington).
  • Movies: Karate Kid, Kung Fu Panda, Lion King, Groundhog Day, Forrest Gump.
  • Speeches: Jobs (connect the dots), Pausch (Last Lecture), Rowling (benefits of failure).

Use what you learn

Failure, fear and panic

  • Denial wastes time. Accept what you can’t control and learn from it.
  • Edison: every failed try teaches you something.

  • Amygdala hijack → fight, flight or freeze.
  • Anti-panic tools: dry run, pause, chess move.

Manage stress

  • A little stress helps; too much for too long harms. Treat the root cause.
  • Energy: body clock, sleep, exercise, food, deep breathing, meditation (just observe), journaling, gratitude, kindness.
  • Time, the six P’s: Big picture, Prepare, Prioritise, Plan, Be productive, Perform.
  • Eisenhower: do now, schedule, delegate, delete. 80/20 rule. Learn to say no. 1-3-5 rule.
  • Rituals: routines done mindfully and on purpose.

Career advice (Prof. Shiva)

  • Don’t regret for too long.
  • Integrity: do it right when no one is watching (Madhava).
  • Be a problem solver; take 2–3 options to your manager.
  • Get involved in your first years; act like an owner.

Closing advice

  • Lead: care for people; character is most of leadership.
