SECTION 01 / 9
Where Week 10 fits in the software life cycle
In earlier weeks you followed the software development life cycle (SDLC) from requirements to design to development (frameworks, IDEs, debugging and code-analysis tools) to testing (unit testing up to whole-system testing). Week 10 covers what happens after the software has been built and tested:
- Deployment means “placing” the software system so that its users can easily access it. A web application, for example, has to be hosted on a server somewhere so that users can reach it through a URL.
- Monitoring means capturing and analysing information about the application while it runs: how users are using it, and whether there are performance problems, errors, timeouts and so on.
Section point: Deployment = making the built system accessible to its users. Monitoring = capturing and analysing an application’s execution information after it has been deployed.
